What is Nutritional/ Environmental Medicine?
Rather than treating symptoms, nutritional/environmental medicine aims to discover the underlying causes of symptoms and diseases, which are usually nutritional, environmental or life-style. All the cells in our body need to be supplied optimally with nutrients to function properly and whether we fall ill or get well depends on our ability to resist any potentially damaging factors in our environment. It makes sense, therefore, to consider underlying factors such as poor diet, disorders of digestion and absorption; vitamin, mineral and other nutritional deficits; food allergy and intolerance; chemical and inhalant sensitivities: chronic fungal and parasite infections of the bowel; immune system dysfunction; exposure to environmental pollution.

Rather than resorting to drugs or surgery, we would work together with each person individually making important dietary changes, advising nutritional or digestive supplements or preparations to eradicate harmful gut infections or desensitising to specific foods and chemicals.

Nutritional/ environmental medicine is not a speciality within medicine but rather a more natural and appropriate way of practicing medicine. It is a fundamental part of the holistic approach to health which considers the whole person in his/her environment.
